Ornamental wolf head with feathers
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A front-facing wolf head with direct eye contact sits at the centre of the design. Its face and ears are filled with fine stippled dotwork and white linework in geometric motifs, while the fur is rendered in dense hatched shading. Striped feathers hang beneath the head on either side, drawn with detailed shading and set against a plain white background.

The dogs stopped barking at the perimeter the week the new moon came up white, and by the time you reached the ridge road the whole valley had gone quiet in the way that means something is watching. You carry the old scanner with the cracked lens, and you do not raise it. The wolf stands on the far side of the cistern wall, grey as slate, and it looks at you the way the Keeper's ledger used to look at debts: steadily, without hurry.

Nobody in Hollin Reach has seen one since the Drowning Years. The depot records list the last pack as shot for taking lambs from the terraces. But the feathers tell a different story. Each one hanging from its ruff is banded pale and dark like a barn owl's, and you know the pattern because your grandmother wove it into the signal flags that guided the supply drones home. She used to say a wolf wearing feathers had been to the sky and come back down to argue about it.
You set the scanner on the wall between you. The wolf does not move toward it. It turns its head a fraction, and the white dotwork along its brow catches the lamp so that for a moment the whole skull looks like a map of the old river valley, the lines running to a point you recognise. The cistern, where the first water was found under the dead soil. Nobody has marked it on a chart since the grid failed.
You unlatch the gate. The lock is rusted, your hands are cold, and the wolf waits while you fight it. When the gate swings, the wolf steps through unhurried, and each feather lifts and settles in the wind like a small flag. It takes three paces toward the water and stops, looking back with the same level gaze, as if the debt is now yours to carry and it is only waiting to see how you will manage.
