...and that's the trouble with the third floor after two in the morning, love. The lifts go quiet and the corridor stretches. Hand me that tea before it goes cold. I've been talking since the ambulance bay and my throat's gone to dust.

It was the winter the boiler failed on Ward Nine, and Agnes Pryce was the only porter still on her feet at half past three. She heard the loading bay doors grind open with no van behind them. Then came the pads, slow and heavy on the lino, and when she turned her torch there were two lights looking back at her from the dark by the linen trolleys. Amber, they were, like the old whisky in the sister's cabinet, and steady as a lighthouse. A wolf stood there, grey as wet slate, its coat thick with frost from somewhere far off the map.

Nobody else saw it, mind. Sister Ruth swore the corridor was empty when she came round with the drugs trolley. But Agnes walked it with the beast at her heel, past the nurses' station, past the vending machine that hummed its one note, until they reached bay four. Old Mr Halloran had been going nowhere slowly for a week, and his breath rattled like a loose coin in a tin. The wolf lay down across the threshold with its great head on its paws, and those eyes never once left the bed.

Mr Halloran woke near dawn and asked for the lamp to be switched off. He said the wolf had come to walk him home, and he was in no hurry to be the first to leave the table. By six his breathing had gone soft as snow. When Agnes looked again the doorway was bare, except for one grey hair on the mat and a faint smell of pine. The lights on Ward Nine have never burned quite so steady since, so mind your step on the way to your bed, love, and leave the corridor lamp on.
