Small airplane tattoo on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black silhouette of an aeroplane sits on the forearm, shown in profile with simple outlines and no shading. The arm rests near a window at night, with blurred city lights behind it, a metal watch on the wrist, and a knitted white sleeve in the foreground. The ink is black and the composition is close and centred on the tattoo.

Lost property at Wyndham Cross closed at six, but Doreen Tallis stayed on past the bell because the tray marked 14 still held something nobody had claimed. It was a black cut-out aeroplane, no bigger than her palm, pinned to a square of card with a bent paperclip. Someone had tucked it into the pocket of a seat on the Glasgow flight and either forgotten it or chosen to leave it behind.

She turned it over under the desk lamp. The card had a phone number in biro on the back, half rubbed away, and the last two digits had been pressed so hard the nib had torn the paper. She dialled it anyway, at ten past seven, and a man answered with the telly loud behind him.

"It's a plane, love," he said, when she described it. "My daughter drew it on the back of a fare receipt. She reckoned if she put it somewhere high enough, it would fly home by itself." He laughed, not quite steadily. "She's nine. We were up for a funeral, and she wanted to go back on her own wings."

Doreen looked at the tray, then past it to the window, where the runway lights laid their long yellow line into the dark. She said she would post it. He said there was no need. In the end she kept it three more days, then wrote the address in capitals and sent it second class, and did not mention it to the supervisor, who would have called it a waste of a stamp.
