Watercolour cat outline on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A single black line traces the outline of a cat seen from behind, with a long curling tail and pointed ears. Soft pink, purple and blue washes sit behind and around the lines, resembling watercolour paint. The tattoo is centred on the skin with plain background visible at the edges.

Dear Tom,

The cat came back on Tuesday, the morning after the Morwenna went out without you, soaked to the whiskers and smelling of diesel. Mrs Penhale swears he is the same grey tom who used to sleep on the winch drum, though I have never known a cat to hold a grudge across a whole winter. I fed him pilchards from the tin and he let me scratch behind one ear, then walked off along the quay with his tail up like a bent wire.
You wrote in your last letter that everything at sea looks like watercolour once the mist comes down. Pink where the sunrise catches the spray, blue where the hull goes grey, every edge gone soft. So I took the paint box from the top shelf in the chandlery, the one Father bought off the travelling man, and tried to make the cat the way he moves: all outline and that long curl at the end, the rest of him just colour.
It did not come out right. The blue ran into the pink and the tail came out thicker than I meant. Still, I pinned it to the kitchen door, and this morning the cat sat in front of it for half an hour with his eyes narrowed, as if he had been waiting for someone to get him properly.
The boats are due in by four if the wind holds. Bring the tin of pilchards. The cat has already decided you are owed a welcome.
