Stretching cat with watercolour wash

Calf · Colour · Photo

A cat stretches with its front paws forward and its tail curled high, outlined in bold black linework. The body is filled with loose, blended washes of pink, orange, teal and purple that fade into the skin, and a small pink heart hangs on a thin black line to the left. The composition is set against the leg with plenty of space around the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat has been on Platform Four since the 6.15 to Carlisle was cancelled, stretching out across the wet bench as though the timetable were a personal insult. You have stopped trying to shoo it. Ginny from the buffet says it belongs to nobody and eats pasties from the bin behind her shutter, and that the station master calls it Inspector, though nobody has ever heard him say it to its face.

Yesterday a girl of about six came through with a red balloon that slipped its string and drifted up over the canopy. She cried until her grandad bought her a pink foil heart, which he tied to the end of the bench with a length of thin black thread. The cat watched the red balloon go with an expression of enormous, private satisfaction. Then it stood, arched its back until its spine made a question mark, and reached one paw towards the glass roof as if it could hook the thing back down by its ribbon.

Today the rain has cleared and the rails are shining. You sit beside the bench with your flask and wait for the board to change. The cat stretches again, slow and total, front paws pushed out along the planks and tail lifted high like a bent wand, and you realise it is not stretching for the sky at all. It is stretching for the heart, which bobs just out of reach on its thread.

The cat looks at the heart, then at you, and decides the thread is your business. So you untie it and hand it over, and the cat trots off under the sign that says the train is delayed, the little heart bouncing behind it like a promise nobody asked for.
