Cat silhouette with watercolour splashes
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A thin black outline shows a cat seen from behind, sitting with its tail curling down and to the left. Soft pink, purple and blue watercolour-style washes fill the body and spread beyond the outline, giving a loose, painterly effect. The design is centred on the inner forearm against plain skin.

Pull your collars up, the lot of you, the lamps along the canal are going out one by one and I haven't reached the good part yet. You want to know about the cat on the dye-works wall? Right. Mrs Hale ran the dye-works behind Pickford Street, with vats of madder pink and violet and a blue that came in from the Indies in tin drums, and she kept a black cat on the top of the sill who watched the whole business like a magistrate.

One wet February night the vat-men left the back door open. The cat, who had no patience for rules, dropped down onto the drying lines where the new silks hung. He walked the length of them with his tail up, and every time he brushed a cloth it bled a little colour into the air, pink where his flank touched, violet where his shoulder went, and blue where he stopped to wash behind one ear. Then he sat down in the middle of the boards with his back to the lamp and his tail curled round his feet, and the colour kept spreading out from him across the floor like a stain that had made up its mind.
Mrs Hale came down at first light with a lamp and a broom. She saw the silks ruined and raised the broom to clout him, but the cat did not move. The pattern he had left in the spilt dye was finer than anything she had ever sold. She sent it to a merchant from Liverpool that same week under the name Cat Sitting, and the merchant never once asked why the tail was so thin and so black, or why it ended in a curl that looked like a question.
Mind your step on the boards as you go out. Some of that colour is still in them.
