Cat outline and red heart on a leg

Fine line · Calf · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a black outlined cat in profile, with pointed ears, whiskers and a curved tail, sitting above a red heart outline. The linework is a consistent single black line for the cat and a thicker red line for the heart, with no shading. The design is set against plain skin with a blurred carpet in the background.

Dear Tom,

The cat came back to the Hallows orchard on Tuesday, the way it always does when the Bramleys start dropping. Mrs Pryce says it has been coming for eleven years and belongs to nobody, which is how cats prefer it. It sat on the bottom rung of the ladder while I picked, tail curled round its feet like a question mark, and watched me fill the bags with a look I can only call disapproving.

Dad would have laughed. He used to say the apples knew when weather was coming because the cat went quiet under the trees. I didn't believe him until the wind got up on Wednesday and the cat walked straight past the sheds, past the ladder, and out through the gap in the hedge without once looking back.

Ellen from the cider barn found me on the crates at dusk with a flask of tea and news that Mrs Pryce is selling in October. The developers want the whole slope for houses, she said, and I said nothing useful, because I had been thinking about whether a cat can be homeless in a place it has never once slept in. Ellen thought that was a daft question. She is probably right.

I've drawn the cat on the back of an old cider invoice, just the outline: the ears, the whiskers, that long tail. Under it I put a red heart, because I couldn't think what else it would be sitting on. Mrs Pryce says I can keep the ladder if I bring it back. Come up at the weekend and bring the good knife with the bone handle. We'll see whether the cat comes for you too.

Love, Nell
