A small tattoo of a bow and arrow sits on the inner wrist of a hand held in a loose fist. The road over Harrow Pass was already white when Oda found the bow lying in the snow, its string snapped and its horn grip still warm from someone's hand. She followed the drag marks down the scree to a ledge where the wind had swept the stones bare. There she found an arrow standing upright in a crack, its tail fletched with three grey feathers, and beyond it a second, and a third lodged in a pine root. Each one pointed down the mountain towards the village lights. Old Ansgar at the inn said that was how the pass had always shown travellers the way home, and that a bowman who shot true never lost his road.

Oda gathered the three arrows and strung the bow with a length of her own hair plaited tight, which the bowyer's wife swore would hold until spring. At the village the men were already lighting torches for a search. Piet sat at the hearth with his boots off and frost in his beard, saying he had only wanted to see whether the eagles were still nesting on the crags.

Oda leaned the three arrows against the wall beside his bow. 'You shot them down the valley,' she said. 'Then you walked after them.' He laughed until he coughed, and in the morning they went up the pass together and found the fourth arrow still waiting in the crack, pointing the way they had come.
