Elephant and heart on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small cartoon elephant facing left, with its trunk curled up towards a outlined heart. The design is drawn in a single, even black line with no shading, and the tattoo is set against plain skin. The composition is simple and centred on the lower leg, with the elephant's legs and tail clearly visible.

The elephant came up the causeway in the third week of the wet, when the brothers had stopped expecting anything but eels and bad news from the fen. Nobody could say where it had walked from. Its feet were grey with silt to the knee, and it stopped at the gate as if it had been told to wait there.

Brother Tobiah, who kept the gate and had the softest heart of any man in the house, went out with a heel of bread. The elephant took it gently, then lifted its trunk and held something up to him: a flat grey stone worn into the shape of a heart. Tobiah turned it over. Someone had scratched a small cross on the back, the mark the abbot used to bless the wells. Nobody in the house remembered losing a stone like that.
Father Anselm came down with his sleeves rolled and told the elephant it could not stay. It did not argue. It folded its legs and lay down in the mud by the gate, facing the road to the fen, and it would not get up until the bell for compline rang. Then it rose, pressed its trunk once against the abbot's chest, and walked away down the causeway with its tail held high.
Anselm kept the stone on the windowsill of the scriptorium after that. He said that when a man made a promise he could not keep, the fen always returned the proof. He never said what promise it was. The stone stayed where he put it, and the gate was left unbarred after dark, in case.
