Outline elephant with heart on ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline tattoo of a cartoon elephant facing right, with its trunk raised and a small open heart above it. The linework is thin, even and solid black, with no shading or fill inside the shapes. The image is in black ink on pale skin, and the close framing shows the design filling most of the frame.

We put it on the wall of the packing shed, between the ladders and the calendar from the cider press. It sat there a week looking at us with its trunk up, the way a dog does when it wants the last biscuit. Then Mavis Oddie's grandson came with his chalk and drew a heart on the whitewash above its head, because he said an elephant ought to be blowing kisses at something. Wilf thought that was daft. Wilf went out to the far rows with his secateurs and came back an hour later saying the heart was the only thing in the shed that didn't need pruning.

So here's the thing I tell the pickers. Whatever you carry up that lane, it will want somewhere to point its nose. The elephant is still on the shed wall, if you care to look, though the chalk's long gone. Mind the step.
