Matching fine line landmass outlines with hearts

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two photographs show matching tattoos of a landmass outline in thin black linework, one on each of two wrists or forearms. Each outline carries a small heart: the upper one is filled in red and the lower one is dark. The lines are clean and even, and the simple, uncluttered composition is set against plain skin with a denim sleeve visible at the top edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The chart had been folded so many times that the coast of Skerrow split along the crease, and Nell Garrity spent the third week of the crossing taping it back together with galley tape. Below decks the Marigold rolled in a long grey swell, and the cook kept insisting the potatoes would not peel themselves.

Her sister had drawn the island first, back in April, on the kitchen table in Ballard Cove. Bridie had pressed Nell's wrist flat under her palm, traced the outline with a biro that skipped on the skin, and then gone over it again with the borrowed machine buzzing on the oilcloth between the teapot and the sugar bowl. She had pricked a tiny dot where the harbour sat. "So you can't say you forgot which way is home," she said, and Nell laughed and let her, though the ink hurt more than she admitted.

On the night watch of the nineteenth day, Nell saw a light low on the horizon and her heart jumped the way it had when she was a girl running to the pier. It was only a freighter's masthead lamp, bobbing on a sea that was nothing like their own. She sat on the hatch cover with her sleeve pushed up and let the lamp throw its thin yellow across her forearm, where the red heart sat over the harbour and the dark heart sat further along, on the western headland, where Bridie kept the lighthouse lamp trimmed every evening.

At the change of watch she wiped the salt from her arm and found the lines still sharp, the way Bridie had promised they would be. Nell folded the chart back along its tired creases, tucked it under her arm, and went below to see about the potatoes.
