The Ohio ran along the top like a seam. He made the bend near Louisville, then the long lean east toward the mountains, and the pane fogged under his breath until the line blurred.

His granddaughter Nell watched from the table, a mug of coffee cooling between her hands. She had a train ticket to Leeds folded in her coat pocket and a job offer she had not yet told him about. The farm was sold in March. The fields would go to a cousin in Bowling Green who wanted the ground for soy, and the barn roof had already begun to sag where the snow sat.

"You'll not get that right on a window," she said. "Not with your hand shaking." He laughed and wiped the glass with his sleeve, then drew it again, slower, and when he reached the bottom edge he wrote a small word beneath the line, leaning in so the letters came out crooked. Home. His breath faded from the letters almost as fast as he finished them.

Nell pulled on her boots and stood at the door. Outside, the yard light buzzed over the empty drive. She pressed her palm flat against the cold glass where the word had been, and when she lifted it the pale print of her hand covered the h and the o and the m, leaving the outline of the state standing clear above it, waiting for morning to come and fill it back in.
