Cal, the Hendersons' boy came back from Cincinnati on Sunday with a state drawn on his shoulder, and your daddy would have had something to say about that. I told him it was a fine likeness, if a bit thin in the east. He turned round so I could see it, like it was a photograph of a grandchild.

I have been thinking about your map. You asked me to draw Kentucky for the school project you never finished, and I did it on the back of a feed-store calendar with the good pencil. I put a dot where the kitchen is, because the middle of the state is nothing but soybean fields and the Pruitts. You said the dot was wrong and a heart would be prettier. I told you hearts were for valentines.

The rain has come off the ridges for three days and the creek is over the low bridge at Cutshin. Ray Pruitt tried to cross in his Ford and had to be pulled out with the tractor. Everybody says the road will wash out by spring, and everybody says it like a sorrow they have been waiting on for years.

Come home at Christmas if the roads allow. Bring the calendar if you still have it. I will hang it by the stove where the grease cannot reach, and we can argue about the heart again over the good coffee.
