Geometric unicorn tattoo on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A standing unicorn is drawn in black ink as a body made of angular, faceted planes, with its horn, mane and hooves outlined. The linework is fine and uniform, with shaded areas built from parallel hatching across the torso and neck. The image is in black and grey on pale skin against a dark blue drape, and a paper stencil of the same design sits to the right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Dear Ines, I have finally got the cutting table to myself, so I can tell you properly about the carpenter's widow who came in on Thursday asking for a unicorn made of corners. She had a drawing folded in her coat, a horse all in facets like a cut diamond that had been stood on its legs, and she said her husband had sketched it on the back of an invoice the week before he died. She wanted it on the inside of her forearm where she could see it while she kneaded bread.

I spent two hours on the stencil alone. Every plane had to meet the next one exactly, or the beast would look like a broken kite, so I ran my ruler along each join and counted the hatching lines twice. The shading went on the shoulder and the throat, where the light would have fallen if the thing were real and standing in a lane with the rain coming off the market awnings. She sat very still and asked me once whether the horn would hurt more than the hooves. I said the hooves, because there is more bone, and she laughed and said that sounded like her husband.
When I finished she looked at it for a long time in the little hand mirror, then turned her arm slowly, as if the horse might walk off. Then she asked me to print a second stencil on the thin paper and she pinned it to the drape by the door. Tell me that isn't the odd kind of thing you and I would have made up at the bar, Ines. I have kept the spare sheet. Come and see it before the rain washes the market out on Saturday.
