Tom used to draw stars on the back of the coal ledgers when the shift was slow. Two outlines, one large and one a size down, and a dot of pencil he pressed so hard it went through the paper. He said the big one was Dad, the small one was him, and the dot was whoever was still underground. Nobody laughed at that. We were all of us counting.

The night of the fall, the stars were out clear over the wheel and I stood on the tip with the ledger under my arm, comparing the sky with his drawing the way you'd check a sum. Two of them were where he had put them. The dot was not there. I went back to the lamp-room and wrote the tally, one lamp short, and copied the three stars into the margin in my own hand.

Walter asked what the marks were for. I told him they were the only honest figures in the building, and he didn't ask again. On Sundays I still take the ledger up the hill and hold it against the dark until the small star comes out, and it always does, a little late, as if it has been waiting for the others to finish.
