Outlined sun on the inner wrist

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small sun is drawn in black outline, with a plain circle at the centre and a ring of pointed rays around it. The linework is even and solid, with no shading, and the tattoo is in black ink only. It sits on the inner wrist and forearm, with colourful festival wristbands wrapped below it on a light bedsheet.

Right, sit down where the stove is warm, because this part is about the sun, and the sun is a liar when the fog's down. You'll have seen it come up over Newlyn on a grey morning, a pale coin you could look straight at. That was the sun old Harry Pascoe drew on the back of a tide table the winter his boat, the Morwenna, went out and didn't come back in the same weather.

Harry never could draw. His daughter Jenny could, so she sat him at the kitchen table with a pencil and told him to make a sun the way a child would, a ring with the rays sticking out like the spikes on a gorse bush. He left the middle plain, because he said the sun doesn't need a face to be seen. He pinned the page inside the wheelhouse, facing the glass, where the spray couldn't get at it.

Every morning after that the fleet went out, and every morning Harry looked at that drawing before he looked at the sea. The other skippers called it foolishness until the morning the Morwenna's engine coughed off the Runnel Stone and the fog came down like wet sacking. Nobody could see a thing. Then the cloud thinned for the length of a breath, and a single ray of light caught the glass exactly where the drawing hung, and the boys behind swore they followed that line of brightness home.

Harry never did learn to draw a face. He never needed one. Jenny still keeps that tide table in a drawer, and every spring she draws the sun on the first page, rays out, nothing in the middle, and tells the new lads to look at it before they look at the water.
