Small sun tattoo on the wrist
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small sun with a round orange centre and pointed yellow and red rays sits on the inside of a wrist. The bold black outline and flat, simple colour fills give it a traditional look. A dark green sleeve cuff and a silver chain bracelet appear below the tattoo against a plain white wall.

Old Tamsin Crake swept the boards of the Gull Hall every Saturday for forty years, and she never once let anyone sweep the ceiling. Above the stage a sun had been painted by a travelling sign-writer the year the hall was built: an orange disc with red and yellow rays spiking out towards the rafters, outlined in black so thick the village children swore it was a spider's web. Folk danced beneath it, and the fiddler from Penhallow always tuned his strings by it, because the sun was the only thing in the hall that never went out of true.

The trouble came in the wet spring when the roof leaked over the north corner. Water ran down the plaster and bled the yellow rays into a brown smear, and the parish council argued for a month about paying a man from town to repaint it. Tamsin said nothing at the meetings. At night she climbed the ladder with a tin of lamp-black and a brush made from an old hair ribbon, and by morning the outline was sharper than it had ever been.
On the last Saturday of the summer, the dancers stopped mid-reel and looked up. The sun had come down a little, the way a lamp does when someone turns the wick up, and its light lay warm on every face in the room. Nobody asked Tamsin how. The fiddler played on, and the hall stayed bright until the last couple had walked home, which is how the village tells it to this day: the sun did the work, and Tamsin only held the ladder steady.
