The lamp room at Cwm Dulas smells of paraffin and wet wool, and you are standing on the bench to reach the wall when Nest comes in with the chalk. Sixteen days the pit has been shut. Sixteen small suns you have scratched beside the door, each with its rays cut short so the men can count the strike from the threshold without anyone having to say the number aloud.

She stops with the chalk in her fist and looks at the new one. You have split it down the middle with a curving line like a river bend, and in each half you have set a seed of dark. She asks what it is meant to be. You tell her it is the two shifts, the ones who go down in the cage and the ones who wait at the top with the kettle on. You dip the brush and go over the dark seed on the right-hand side once more, slowly, until it is the blackest thing on the wall, and then you climb down and open the door wide so the light can reach it.
