Outlined triangle on the upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A rear view of a person with pink hair gathered into a loose bun, with a small earring visible. A simple black outlined triangle sits at the base of the neck on the upper back, with the apex pointing upwards. The tattoo is in black ink on pale skin against a soft, light background.

Dear Hal,

The surveyors left on Tuesday with their theodolites wrapped in sacking, and I thought you should hear it from me rather than from Mrs Pennock at the post office, who will have made it sound worse than it was. They never found the benchmark they came for. Instead they found a triangle cut into the lintel of the old chapel at Wrenhill, apex pointing up, scored so deep the mortar has gone grey around it. Nobody in the village will say who made it.
Mr Abbott, the older one, measured it three times with a steel tape and called it a fool's mark. The younger one, Lowry, went quiet and took a rubbing of it on greaseproof paper, folding it into his notebook as carefully as a love letter. I asked him what it meant. He said a triangle is the only shape that cannot be pushed out of true, which is the sort of thing an engineer says when he has no answer.
Here is what I know. Last winter the dance at the Corn Exchange ran until the lamps guttered, and someone scratched a triangle into the sill of the back window so the musicians could find the door in the dark. I have walked past it every night since, counting the paces from there to the gate. It comes to eleven every time. Come home before the thaw and count them with me.
Yours, Nell
