Deathly Hallows symbol on the back of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small black linework tattoo of the Deathly Hallows symbol, a triangle with a circle inside and a vertical line through it, sits on the back of the neck just below the hairline. The lines are thin and even with solid black fill, and the piece is shown in greyscale. The background shows window blinds and a white top strap on the shoulder, with the rest of the frame kept soft and plain.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

In the harbour town of Scarrow, the ferryman Tobias Lund had three sons and one boat, and when the fog rolled in off the grey water he rowed the dead across to the far shore because no one else would. One night a stranger sat in his stern, thin as a mast, and asked for the crossing for nothing. Tobias asked what he could pay. The stranger said he would give the ferryman three things in place of coin.

The first was a length of ash wood that could knock the wind out of a gull. The second was a stone with a hole worn clean through it, which, when held to the eye, showed the lighthouse lamp even through rain. The third was a grey cloak that smelled of salt and of nothing else. Tobias asked which he ought to keep. The stranger only smiled and stepped onto the far shore, where no lamp had ever burned.

Tobias gave the stick to his eldest and the stone to his middle son, and he folded the cloak into the bottom of the boat. The eldest fought a man on the quay and lost nothing but his temper. The middle son found his way home through the fog by the stone. When Tobias grew too old to hold the oars, he pulled the grey cloak around his shoulders and rowed out alone.

The youngest found the empty boat drifting off the breakwater at dawn, its oars shipped neatly and a line scratched into the thwart: come across when you are ready. He did not go looking for his father. He hung the stone on a cord at his neck and walked down to the slipway to wait for the tide. That evening the fog came in thick, and somewhere out on the grey water a lamp that had never been lit began to burn.
