Geometric polygon design on the chest
Geometric · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a symmetrical arrangement of nested polygons, with a dense central point and outer lines radiating to an octagonal outline. The linework is fine, crisp and solid black, with several dashed lines extending beyond the shape. The design is shown in black ink only, photographed straight on against pale skin.

Dear Ruth, the frame is finally square, though Mr Abbott swears by his eye and I swear by the string. You will laugh, but I have been pegging out the lawn all week the old way, with a cord knotted at the twelve-foot mark and a nail at every corner. The outer octagon holds. Father would have called the chalk lines fussy, but eight points never quite agree with a clock face, and I wanted the path to argue with it a little.

Then the inner rings. Step in from the outer octagon to a smaller one turned half a turn, so its corners poke through the sides like a star trying to get out. Do that three times and you reach the middle, where everything runs together into one dark dot of clipped box. The dashed lines are the part Mr Abbott hated. They are not paths. They are sight lines, marked with cane tips, so that whoever stands at the centre can look out past the hedge and see where each spoke would land if the garden went on forever.
Here is what I did not expect. Yesterday, with the last peg in, I stood at the middle and the spokes ran straight out over the wall into the rector's field, and a heron lifted from the pond exactly on one of them. I have checked it twice with string. It was not luck, Ruth. It was the geometry doing what it does, and it made me feel very small and very precise at once.
Write soon, and tell me whether you still have Father's compass. I want to draw the thing on paper before the box grows over it.
