Skull with geometric lattice on thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A human skull in profile is overlaid with a layered grid of black geometric lines forming nested cubes and diamond shapes. The skull is shaded with fine stippling and hatching, giving it an engraved look, while the lattice lines are solid and crisp. The ink is entirely black and grey on a bare leg, with blue shorts and a white slatted wall in the background.

The master would not let me touch the skull until the cubes were down. For three days I ruled lines into the copper with a steel straightedge and a pair of dividers that had belonged to his father, nesting box inside box until the plate looked like a window seen through another window. Mr Harrold checked each corner with a glass. 'Lines first,' he said. 'Bone is only what the lines agree to hold.'

On the fourth morning I began the skull in stipple, one dot at a time, the way the anatomy primers wanted it, so the brow would read soft under lamplight. The burin slipped twice and I had to rock the plate and burnish the mistakes flat. Mrs Pell from the chapel brought tea at eleven and stood behind my chair watching the dots gather into a cheekbone. She said nothing about the lattice, which by then was so exact it hurt to look at its centre.
Harrold came in that afternoon and looked not at the skull but at the innermost diamond, where every line converged on a single point. He took the burin from my hand and pressed one clean stroke there, without a dot, and told me that point was where the measure was taken from, the place a man must stand to see the whole of a thing. I had thought the grid was a cage. He said it was the eye.
We pulled the proofs that evening. The lattice came off the plate standing sharp while the bone seemed to sink behind it, black where the crosshatch was dense and grey in the hollows of the skull. I kept the first proof. In the lamplight the skull looked like something being carried carefully out of a room, and the lines held it the way a hand holds a cup.
