Overlapping triangles and dot on the hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand rests on a weathered animal skull, with a small tattoo of two overlapping triangle outlines and a single dot on the back of the hand. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading. The plain background of a grey wall and a white mannequin head leaves the tattoo as the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell Gaskell lit the oven at half three, because the old woman who taught her said the bread knew the hour better than any church clock in Harrowmere. A ewe's skull sat on the flour shelf where it had always sat, teeth the colour of weak tea, and nobody in the village asked why it stayed there.

Every loaf that left the shop before sunrise carried a mark on its crown, cut with the bread lame before it went into the proving basket. Two triangles, one laid over the other, and a single dot where the lower point strayed past the edge. The old woman called it the lantern and the tally. She would say no more than that, and Nell cut it for twenty years without asking.

The stranger came on a wet Tuesday, when the lamps were still lit along the high street. He wore a coat too thin for the weather and did not shake the rain from it. He asked for the dotted loaf and nothing else, and laid a coin on the counter with a hole worn through its middle. Nell gave him the bread. He turned it over, touched the dot with one finger, and said his grandfather had owed the shop a loaf for a winter's kindness, and that the debt was now paid in full.

He set the coin on the skull's brow. The teeth seemed to shift, very slightly, the way a sleeper's jaw does. When Nell looked again the coin was gone and the dot on the next loaf had moved one place to the right, as if the tally had been kept and was starting over. She took up the lame and began to cut.
