Ringed planet on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A ringed planet sits on the forearm, its globe filled with dense, ornate circular patterns and fine detail. The rings are outlined and cross the sphere at an angle. The ink is a single blue-grey tone against pale skin, photographed on a plain light background with the hand extended to the right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The orchard wall at Hollin Cross had a gap in it the width of a cart, and my grandmother always said the planet had come down through that gap the spring the frost killed the plums. Nobody believed her. The vicar's wife said it was a cartwheel, the miller swore it was a lamp fallen off a barge. But the grass inside the wall was scorched in a perfect ring, and in the middle of the ring sat a sphere no bigger than a bread oven, banded with silver rings that hummed when the wind blew from the east.

What my grandmother did was sit down beside it with her knitting. She knitted for three days. Every stitch she dropped, the sphere turned a little, and every row she finished, a new pattern rose on its skin, circles inside circles, small seeds of light arranged like the spokes of a wheel that had never been built. By the third evening the whole village had come to the wall to watch, and the children were counting the rows aloud.

On the fourth morning the rings went quiet and the sphere was cool to the touch. Under it, pressed into the scorched grass, was a single blue thread, wound tight as a wrist. My grandmother tied it round her own arm, just above the elbow, and never took it off. She said that was how she knew the planet had chosen to stay on our side of the wall, and that someone in the family would always keep an eye on the gap.
