Crystal tattoo on the finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand rests on weathered wood beside a cream skull and a cluster of clear quartz crystals. A small black outline tattoo of a faceted crystal sits on the side of one finger, drawn with thin, even linework and no shading. The palette is monochrome apart from the pale stone and skin tones, and the close framing keeps the tattoo as the clear focal point.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cutter's boy came down the mountain on the third day with his hands empty, and his mother asked him where the stone was. He said it had been in the hollow where the old men said it would be, and that it had looked back at him, the way a well looks back when you lean over it.

Nobody in Sarn believed him until the spring floods. Then the river ran clear for a month, and the children found clear crystals in the shallows, each as long as a thumb and cut with edges no hand had made. The elders carried them to the temple of the bone-keeper, a grey woman who kept a cream skull on her altar, the skull of a queen, so the story went. She set the crystals around it like teeth.

The boy wanted one. He had not forgotten the cold of the hollow or the feeling of being counted. When he climbed back with a flint chisel and a waterskin, the quartz had already been dug out by someone else. In its place lay a single faceted stone that fit the hollow exactly, as if it had been waiting for a hand his size. He understood then that a stone is never simply taken. Sitting on the wet rock, he mixed soot with spit, pricked the shape of the crystal into the skin beside his finger with a bone needle, and kept at it until every line ran straight.

When the grey woman saw it, she said nothing. She only pressed a crystal into his palm. It was warm, as if it had lain in the sun, though the hollow was always cold. Some debts, she said, are paid by carrying the shape of the thing you could not keep.
