Owl on a branch with leaves
Traditional · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded owl with wide eyes sits centrally on a thin branch, with its wings and tail rendered in soft grey tones. Symmetrical leaves with dark outlines extend to both sides of the branch, framing the owl. The tattoo is in black and grey ink on smooth skin, photographed straight on with even lighting.

Nell had counted the lamps from the chapel wall every night since the Mary Ann failed to make the bar. Eleven boats had come home in the last week, and each time she had gone down the steps to meet them, and each time her brother's boat had not been among them. The blackthorn grew out of the wall above the harbour, its single branch bent level over the drop, and the old owl that lived in it had long since stopped minding her.

Her grandmother had said an owl on a branch was a watchman who never slept, and that a girl who sat beneath one with her hands in her lap was only waiting. Nell did not sit. She stood with her collar up and watched the leaves shiver, first on the left of the branch and then on the right, as if the wind were deciding which way to take the tide. The owl turned its wide face towards the sea and did not blink once.
At the turn of the tide she heard the engine before she saw the light, a cough and then a steady knock against the swell. A single lamp came round the breakwater, low in the water, with a second lamp trailing it like a child holding onto a coat. Nell counted them as they passed the lighthouse. Two. Then three. Then the one she had been waiting for, riding a little lower than the rest.
The owl dropped from the branch without a sound and slid out over the harbour. Nell went down the steps two at a time, her hands already numb, and reached the slip as the Mary Ann bumped against the stones. Her brother lifted a hand from the tiller. He did not smile, but he did not need to. Behind her, the owl came back to its branch and settled, as if it had only stepped out for a moment.
