Owl on a blossom branch on the back

Neo-trad · Back · Mixed · Photo

A grey owl with large amber eyes sits on a dark branch, with its wings shaded in black and grey. Red blossoms and green leaves frame the owl along a curving branch that extends across the design. Grey and black shading gives the owl depth, while the flowers and leaves use bright, solid colour against pale skin.

You have worked the late shift at Wexcombe Halt for eleven winters, and the owl has worked it longer. Nobody on the timetable knows where she came from. She simply appeared on the signal gantry one November, grey as the platform paint, and took up residence in the old cherry tree beside the water tower as though she had been booked for it.

Tonight the last northbound is four minutes late, and you stand under the canopy with the lamp cold in your hand, listening to the rails tick as they cool. Pink blossom has come early this year and lies across the ballast like confetti nobody swept up. Above you she shifts on her branch and turns her head a full half circle to look at you, amber eyes wide and unimpressed. "Don't start," you tell her. The headlamp swings round the cutting, a long white smear on the wet rails, and the owl lifts unhurriedly over the signal wires toward the fields.

The train sighs to a stop. A woman steps down with a violin case and one battered suitcase and asks whether this is the stop for the village. You say it is, though the village is two miles off and the bus stopped running in October. She looks up into the tree and laughs. "She's watching me." You tell her the owl always does that to people who are running late, and she laughs again, and the doors chime shut behind her.

After the train has gone, you find a feather on the platform edge, grey barred with black, and you pin it under the clock with the others. Eleven winters of feathers. The branch has never once been empty when the last train comes in.
