The owl came to Marram House the spring the wind took the north chimney clean off, and it sat on the washing line for three nights glaring at the lodgers like a magistrate. Nobody could shift it. Mrs Pellow tried a broom, and the bird just turned its head all the way round and looked at her as if she'd asked the wrong question.

On the fourth night a girl came up from the station with one case and a letter she would not let anyone read. She had cherry blossom pinned in her hair, pink and brittle, bought off a barrow in Hastings for a penny, because she said there were no cherry trees left in the whole county and she meant to carry one about regardless. The owl took to her at once. It dropped down from the line onto the rail of her window and sat there, and every morning after that she laid a sprig of blossom on the sill beside it, and every morning the sprig was gone by dusk.

The letter, when she finally opened it on the pier, said her brother had gone down with the Mary Aster off the Dogger Bank and nobody would say how. She folded it small and put it in her pocket. The owl flew out over the water that night and did not come back to the line until the tide turned, and when it did, there was a single blossom snagged in its feathers, already brown at the edges.

So if you ever see a grey owl sitting on a branch in a picture, you'll know what it is. It is the one that waits for the boats. Now the kettle's on, and the third stair has been warned.
