Owl and floral scroll tattoo sketch

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A black pencil sketch of an owl with a large round eye and speckled chest, set beside a vine of curling scrolls ending in bud-like flowers arranged in a loose circle. The linework is loose and sketchy with light shading on the owl and the flower centres, and faint construction circles and crosshair guide lines are visible. The drawing is in black and grey on a white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Kallias had pricked the circle into the wet clay first, the way his uncle taught him, a compass point turned slowly until the rim was true. Then he scratched the two fine cross-lines that split the cup into quarters so nothing would wander. The owl would go on the right, where the handle could not reach it. Beyond the workshop the Kerameikos smelled of kiln smoke and river mud, and the merchant Demetrios had sent word that he wanted owls, Athena's owls, and nothing else.

He drew the owl first, quick and certain, a round eye with a dark centre and a chest flecked with small marks like sesame seeds. Then the vine. He could not stop it curling. Every scroll wanted to end in a closed bud, a pomegranate flower folded tight, and he let them, looping them around the rim until the cup seemed to turn under his stylus while it sat still. Lysandros came past with a jar of slip, looked over his shoulder, and said nothing for so long that Kallias kept his hand moving.

"The owl is looking out," the master said at last. "The flowers are looking in." He tapped the lip of the clay with one stained fingernail. "Whoever drinks from this will see the owl only when the cup is empty."

Kallias sat back on his stool and considered the bowl of his own work, the buds closing on each other like a ring of hands. He rubbed out the nearest cross-line with his thumb, leaving the circle unbroken, and pressed the owl's eye a little deeper so it would hold through the firing.
