Owl and roses on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large owl sits at the centre of the design, framed by two roses on the upper and lower sides and a beaded circle beside its body. The work is rendered in black linework with no visible shading, and the outlines are clean and even. The tattoo fills most of the frame on a bare thigh, with dark shorts visible at the top edge and part of another tattoo at the right edge.

The tower stairs are missing their third step, so you climb on the wall side where the stones still hold. The owl has been on the broken parapet since dusk, its head turning as you pass, as if it keeps a tally of who goes up. Below, the roses that grew through the chapel floor have gone to hips and thorn, and the old lord's bell still hangs from its beam with cobweb strung between the clapper and the rope.

Your grandmother told you the owl was the castle's last sentry, that when the family left they paid it to stay. You didn't believe her until the night the rain came sideways and you found a ring of beads wedged in the mortar of the gatehouse, each one smooth as a pebble from a river. You threaded them onto a length of string and hung them from the nail where the portcullis chain used to be, the way she hung her own dreamcatcher over the kitchen sill.
Morning comes grey over the moor. The owl is gone, but its feathers lie in a neat fan across the threshold, and on the top stone someone has left a single rose cut clean from the bush. You turn it over in your fingers, wondering whether it was a warning or a thank you.
You pocket one feather and leave the rose where it lies. When you walk down through the broken gate, the beads on their string knock together behind you like someone counting.
