Owl with spread wings and arrow on the torso
Traditional · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A large owl with outstretched wings sits centrally on the torso, with an arrow passing horizontally beneath its talons and a dotwork sunburst rising behind its head. The owl is rendered in bold black outlines with heavy solid black areas, fine stippled dots and soft grey shading across the feathers. A single teal green gem on the owl's chest is the only colour in the image.

In the village of Harrow Dene, where the bakery shut at four and the church bell was rung by hand, the owl had been seen perched on the mill roof for three winters before anyone thought to ask what it wanted. Old Mrs Pellow said it was waiting for a debt to be paid. Her grandson said it was waiting for the mill to fall down so it could have the roof. Nobody argued with the owl itself.

Tom Garrow, who drove the coal lorry, was the one who finally climbed up. He found a dead sparrow, a brass key and a green glass stone the size of a hen's egg, warm as bread. When he brought the stone down, the owl lifted off the roof and flew low over the Sunday market, its wings spread wide enough to shade the stalls, and it dropped an arrow into the square. The shaft stood upright in the cobbles, fletched with grey feathers that did not stir.
Nobody pulled it out. The vicar's wife tried, then the blacksmith, then Tom himself, and the arrow would not budge. That evening the sun went down behind the hill in a fan of gold, and for a moment the rays looked exactly like the ones carved over the church door, while the owl sat on the lych gate and watched them fade.
Tom gave back the stone at dawn, set it on the arrow's head, and walked away without looking round. In the morning the arrow was gone and the mill roof was bare. Mrs Pellow said the debt had been paid, though she would never say by whom.
