Owl and pink flower on upper back

Neo-trad · Back · Mixed · Photo

A grey-shaded owl with wide eyes and scrolled feather detail perches on a leafy branch. A pink flower with darker red shading sits at the lower left of the owl, and the tattoo is set against bare skin with a patterned top at the bottom edge. The owl is rendered in soft grey tones with fine shading, while the flower and leaves carry the colour.

Rain has been coming sideways across the market square since seven, and by eleven the tarpaulins over the fruit stalls sag like wet bellies. You have sat under the awning of the old clockmaker's shop for an hour, waiting for Mrs Okafor to finish haggling over a tin of brass keys, counting the things nobody claims: a single glove, a jar of barley sugar, a pocket watch that stopped at twenty past four.

Then the owl arrives, not swooping but settling, as if it had booked the spot. It perches on the iron rail above the magnolia seller's empty bucket, grey as the sky, its feathers worked into curls like the scrollwork on a churchyard gate. Its eyes are wide and round and entirely unimpressed by the weather. Mrs Okafor sees it too and stops mid-sentence, a key still dangling from her fingers.

"That bird has sat on that rail every wet morning since my husband died," she says. "He never once asked to be paid."

You nod, because nodding is easier than asking what she means. The owl shakes out its wings, and a spray of droplets falls like loose change. Then it opens its beak and drops something onto the cobbles at your feet: a small brass key, warm from its throat, its bow curled into a tiny spiral.

You pick it up and carry it to the watch in your coat pocket. The key slides into the case, turns once, twice, and somewhere behind the rain the hands begin to move.
