The lord wanted the keep emptied before the men came over the moor. He sent his gold down the well and his dogs over the wall, and he left Maud with a sack of sugared plums, two cut diamonds sewn into her hem, and orders to open the gate for the sheriff's men. She sat under the owl's stone head for three nights and talked to it. It said nothing. Owls rarely do. On the fourth morning she pressed the key into the little heart-shaped hole in the skull's brow and turned it the wrong way, and the gate stayed shut, and the sheriff's men rode home cold and hungry.
So the castle still stands, or what the rain has left of it, and the lock still holds. Go on, lay your palm flat against the iron. Feel how warm it is. That is only the sun, I promise you, and the owl's own patience, which never runs out.
