Owl and keyhole ornament on an arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large black and grey tattoo of an owl with detailed plumage and staring eyes sits at the top, with an ornamental panel below it. The panel includes a keyhole with a heart, two diamonds, a small cross and lotus-like petals, all built from fine dotted and lined shading. The photograph is taken close up with the arm bent, and a dark sleeve and part of another tattoo are visible at the edge of the frame.

The reunion was held in the old schoolroom because nobody could agree on anywhere else. Maud Harrow came early with a tin of shortbread and a brass key on a faded ribbon. It opened the cloakroom cupboard, the one with the iron hooks that nobody had cleaned since the year the roof leaked.

The owl came with the key, the way it always did in the telling. Long ago, when the school stood alone at the end of Marrow Lane, an owl sat on the lintel and watched the children go in. It saw who forgot their gloves and who left a little brother crying at the gate. Each night it took one small lost thing into its keeping, and each morning it set the thing back at the right door. The old headmistress said the owl kept the keyhole of every heart in the village, and that a child who earned its favour would never lose the road home.

The reunion reached the cupboard at half past nine. Dennis Pryce, who had once hidden a frog in the register, went quiet when he saw a pair of red mittens on the bottom hook, still tied together with wool. Nobody had claimed them in forty years. When Maud opened the door a grey dust lifted in a long stripe through the lamplight. Pinned inside the cupboard was a card in round, careful capitals: WE WAITED FOR YOU AT THE GATE.

They walked out to the lane at dusk, carrying the mittens between them. The gatepost was bare until they reached it, and then the owl was there, turning its head slowly as if counting them. It lifted into the dark without a sound. Each of them went home that night by a different road, and each of them found the way.
