Owl designs in a black and grey collage
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A grid of eight owl illustrations, ranging from fully frontal faces with ornate patterned feathers to small perched birds on a branch. The linework is mostly fine and detailed, with stippling, feather hatching and solid black areas for depth. Shading is in black and grey only, and several pieces include roses, a heart or a dreamcatcher as part of the composition.

The owls came to Aldgate House the winter the lift stopped for good. Nobody saw them arrive. One morning there were four of them along the parapet of the top floor, feathers the colour of wet slate, turning their heads slowly as if they were reading the car park. My nan said they were old residents come back to check on us. The council said pigeons.

I took the night shift on the bins with a torch and a flask, and I learned that owls do not care what the council thinks. They dropped down to the stairwell where the strip lights hummed and sat on the rail outside flat 42. The one with a dark heart mark on its chest waited there every night for Mrs Adeyemi to come home from her late shift. She left her window open a crack for it. She said it was the only neighbour who ever said goodnight.
In February the lift was finally fixed. The engineer, a lad called Tomasz with grease up to his elbows, climbed onto the roof to bolt back a vent cover and came down white-faced, holding a tin. Inside was a wedding ring wrapped in a school sock, a bottle cap, a button from someone's winter coat. The owls had been gathering things from every balcony on the estate for years. Nobody claimed the ring. We set the tin back on the rail, and within the hour it was empty.
The lift works now, mostly. Mrs Adeyemi still leaves her window open. On Sundays I climb the stairs with my flask and look up, and the top floor is full of small round eyes catching the light, all of them watching the door the way you would watch for someone you were expecting.
