Owl flash sheet with lettering
Black and grey · Flash
A sheet of black outline owl designs in many sizes and poses, some perched on branches and others standing alone. Linework is uniform and clean, with the feathers, eyes and bellies filled with dots, scallops, flowers, hearts and swirls. The words OWLS and LOVE appear in decorative lettering between the drawings, and the design is entirely in black on white.

The barn dance at Coldharbour ran on owls, or so the old women said. Every beam in the hall had one perched on it, round-eyed and pale as candle wax, and they blinked down at the stamping boots while Josiah Fenn tuned his fiddle. Nobody had seen them arrive. Ada Pym swore she had left a saucer of milk on the sill one night and found it licked clean by morning, with a flower pressed into the rim.

It was Tom Hebble, the carter's boy, who asked the owl with the flowers on her wing. He was half drunk on cider and wanting to be brave, and he bowed to the beam where she sat. She dropped from it without a sound, landed on the boards beside his left boot, and spread her wings the way a lady opens a fan. Fenn struck up a reel. Tom danced it with his heart going like a hammer, and the owl hopped and spun on her clawed feet as neat as a sixpence, dots and scallops rippling across her belly with every turn.
They danced until the lamps guttered. The other owls stopped blinking and clicked their beaks in time. When the cock crowed over Hebble's farm, Tom reached for his partner's wing and found only a feather, grey-brown and scalloped at the edge, warm in his palm. Ada says the beams have owls carved on them now, and every one has a heart scratched into its breast, though no carver in Coldharbour owns a knife that fine.
Tom never married. He walked the lane every night whistling a reel, and on the third night a pair of pale eyes answered him from the hedge.
