Owl on a branch on the lower leg
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A small owl with large round eyes sits on a thin branch, with two green leaves growing from its right end. The owl is outlined in dark grey, with soft pink shading on the eyes, face and layered feather scales. The composition is centred on the lower leg against a plain skin background.

Sit yourself on the flour crate, lad, where the oven breathes on your back, and don't touch the cooling racks till I say. Four o'clock is the owl's hour, not ours, but my father always said bread knows nothing of clocks. It knows heat, and it knows the hands that wait on it.

Out the back there was an elder, and on its lowest bough sat an owl the size of a teacup, with eyes like two cartwheels of cinnamon. Every morning she came down when the first tray slid out, and every morning my father broke her a corner of crust and set it on the sill. He never fed her from his hand. That was the rule between them, and he kept it for nineteen years.
Then came the hard winter, the one when the canal froze solid and the bakery stood cold for three days. When the ice went, my father walked out to the elder and found the branch snapped clean, a few dead leaves tangled in the frost. He stood there a long while, so I'm told, with the tray going cold in his arms. Then he took a green cutting from the hedge, pushed it into the broken wood, and bound it with wet string.
Forty years on, that bough is still there, green at the tip, and every dawn a small owl sits on it looking down at the sill. I'm too old to bake now, so I sit with the tray and wait for her to decide. Hush. There. Do you see her? She's waiting for the crust, same as always.
