The mason's scaffold went up on the Tuesday, and by the Thursday Owen Pryce had learned that the owl on the north tower had opinions about it. She sat on the same bent branch of the ivy-choked sycamore every evening, round-eyed and perfectly still, and watched him the way a magistrate watches a man who has walked into court without a hat.

The castle had been falling down slowly since the Civil War, the gatehouse first, then the chapel roof, then the stair that nobody climbed. The Trust wanted the north tower pointed and sound by autumn. Owen wanted it done properly, which meant mortar mixed by hand, lime from a kiln in Derbyshire, and no hurry. He worked alone, with a flask and a radio that picked up only one station, and he talked to the owl the way his grandmother had talked to the hens.

On the ninth day he reached the window ledge and found a nest of old feathers, a crushed beetle case and a scrap of blue ribbon that had belonged to some child a long time ago. He thought about the Trust's letter, the one that said wildlife surveys were required before works. He had not filed one. He sat on the planks with the ribbon in his palm and heard himself say, quite seriously, that the ledge would wait until the young had flown.

The owl blinked. Owen blinked back. Then she turned her head a full half circle, the way owls do when they have decided a thing is settled, and went back to watching the lime bucket. He mixed the next batch a little wetter and left the north window for last.
