Owl on a branch on the foot

Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small cartoon-style owl sits on a leafy branch, with large round eyes ringed by scalloped detail and a patterned crest. The feathers and body are built from fine stippled dots and short hatched lines, with soft grey shading across the chest and head. The design is in black and grey ink, centred on the outer top of the foot with plenty of skin around it.

Mind the fire, children, and move closer, because this is the one about the owl who would not blink. In the kingdom of Marrowdeen, where the river ran backwards on feast days and nobody thought it odd, there lived a widow named Hesta Fenwick who kept the only lamp in the valley lit all night. Her husband had gone over the eastern pass for salt and never come back, and she stood at her window every evening saying the same thing to the dark: bring him home, or bring me something to watch.

The owl came the autumn the frost arrived early. It was a small, round, serious thing, with a crest like a folded leaf and eyes so wide they looked borrowed from a much bigger bird. It perched on the lowest branch of the apple tree beside her cottage and stared at the lamp. Hesta said, Well, you're no use at keeping watch, and the owl turned its head all the way round, slowly, the way a clock hand moves, and said nothing back.

Every night after that it came. Hesta mended her stockings by its light and told it about the salt, the pass, the gaps in the hedgerow where her husband used to leave her wild plums. Some nights she thought the owl was listening. Some nights she thought it was only waiting for her to fall asleep so it could fly off to whoever was truly in charge of lost men. On the last night of the frost, she found a small brown feather on the sill and a salt crystal pressed into it, and she laughed until her eyes ran, because the owl had never once blinked, and neither, it seemed, had the lamp.
