Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small owl sits front-facing with large round eyes, a hooked beak and a pair of raised ear-like tufts. The feathers are built up with grey shading and fine stippled texture, with darker tones along the wings and belly. The piece is shown in black and grey on pale skin, against a blurred green lawn.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The oven was already warm when the owl came down from the chimney stack, as it did every morning in February, and settled on the flour sacks to watch Agnes knead. She had never named it. Her mother had said an owl that sat in a bakehouse before dawn was keeping the bread honest, and that was name enough.

The winter the mill burned, a stranger came to the back door with a wet coat and no money, asking for bread on account. Agnes was reaching for the iron handle when the owl lifted its ear-tufts and turned its wide eyes on the man. He saw it and went pale. He said his name was Tobias Reeve and that he had walked from the coast with a debt on his head. Agnes did not ask what debt. She wrapped a loaf in muslin and gave it to him, and the owl stayed still until he was gone down the lane.

The next morning, when she lifted the first tray from the oven, the crust of the largest loaf had risen in the shape of a small round-eyed bird, feathers scored into the top with the back of a knife. Agnes had not touched it. She carried it to the window, where the grey light was coming up over the fields, and the owl, perched on the sill, blinked once and flew out into the dawn without looking back.
