Mara, the owl is still on the branch. I checked this morning, the way you'd check a kettle. The ash tree by the north wall came down in the storm last winter, but the branch you carved from it hangs over the workshop door now, and the owl sits on it with those green eyes Dad insisted were wrong, too bright for a bird that only works nights. You were right about the eyes. Nobody else would have dared.

The council sent another notice about the orchard. Forty years of reclaimed land and they still call it an unauthorised settlement, as if the word libertad was ever a permit. Tomas read the notice aloud at supper in his bad Spanish accent and we all laughed until the lamp smoked. I kept thinking about the day you painted that word under the owl's perch, letters looping like they had somewhere better to be, and how the man at the market said nobody would be able to read it in a hundred years.
We can read it. The children trace it with their fingers before bed. Last week little Ines asked what the owl was waiting for, and I told her the same thing you told me: that it was waiting for the fence to come down, and then it would fly over it, and nobody would think to shoot at a bird.
Come home when the frost breaks. The owl will still be here, and so will the branch, and so will we.
