Owl on a dreamcatcher across the upper back

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A cartoon owl with large round eyes sits on top of a dreamcatcher with a woven outer ring, a circular web of intersecting lines and dot accents, and three dark feathers hanging from beads below. The owl and feathers use soft grey shading, while the web is drawn in fine black lines. The tattoo is centred on bare skin across the upper back, with the subject's hair visible at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Porthgwin remembered who first hung the willow hoop above the back door of Gull Cottage, only that the owl had been sitting on it since before the lodgers started coming. Mrs Tamsin Pell said it had arrived with the wreck of the Morwenna in the hard winter, perched on a broken spar, and would not be shifted.

Each night the boarders climbed to their attics, and each night the owl turned its great round eyes to the window and watched the lane. Whatever came up from the harbour in a bad dream, it caught in the web the way gnats catch in a spider's silk. Each morning Tamsin walked the yard with a broom, swept the bad dreams off the threads and carried them down the cliff steps to the tideline, where three black feathers hung from their beads and lifted in the wind.

One spring a sailor named Eli Garrow came to lodge, grey with a fever from some far port, and he slept badly for a week. He cried out about drowned men calling from the dark. On the seventh night Tamsin sat up beside him and saw the web shiver, though no air moved in the room. The owl's eyes went wide, then narrow.

She took the broom out before dawn. The web was heavy, knotted with a hundred grey shapes like wet cloth. She carried them down to the sand, and the tide came in to meet her, and the feathers rose and turned out over the water. Eli slept through breakfast and woke light as a gull, and could not remember a single drowned face. Back in the yard the owl had closed its eyes, as though it had done a hard night's work and was content to rest.
