Owl on a branch across the upper back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A stylised owl with a large round eye and scalloped feather detailing sits on a thick branch that sweeps across the upper back. The branch tapers into leaves and ornate scrolling foliage, with fine sketched twigs extending to the left. The shading is in black and grey, with soft tonal gradients on the body and bark texture on the branch, set against warm skin.

The owl came to Harrow Point the winter the lift in Block C stopped for good. Nobody saw it arrive. Gwen Tully, on the fourteenth floor, heard a soft drop against the balcony rail at four in the morning, the sound a coat makes sliding off a hook, and by the time she got her curtains back the owl was sitting on the bent ash the council had planted by the bin store and then forgotten.

It had one great round eye, black as a wet pavement, and it looked at the block the way Gwen's late husband used to look at a bad joiner's work. The children dared each other to climb the ash. Kieran Dunn, nine, got as far as the second branch before the owl turned its head all the way round and said, plainly, "Your mum is up. Go home." He went home. His mum was sitting at the kitchen table with the gas bill, and afterwards she swore she had heard nothing at all.
In the second week of the frost Gwen went down with a torch and asked the owl what it wanted. It said nothing for a long while. Then it lifted one wing, the way you'd wave a queue forward, and pointed with its feathers at the lift doors. "Every light in this building is owed to someone who stayed up for somebody else," it said. "Find me the one who did it unseen." Gwen thought of Mr Osei, the night caretaker, who had carried a boy's shopping up fourteen floors every winter for three years and never once been thanked on the rota. She fetched him. The lift hummed on at dawn.
When the light came up the owl had gone, leaving one dark feather on the ash and a scatter of leaves nobody could account for. The council sent a man to cut the tree down that spring. He tried the saw on the trunk, found the bark too tough, and went back to his van for a cup of tea.
