Owl tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A small owl is tattooed on the middle finger of a clenched fist, with a symmetrical face, large round eyes shaded in orange and yellow, and a dark body built from fine lines. The black linework and sparse shading are set against pale skin, and the owl fills most of the visible finger. The rest of the frame shows a blurred yellow top and a dark background.

You learn the owl before you learn the lift. Fourteenth floor of Harrow Court, where the lift stops between floors whenever the wind comes off the estate car park, and the old man in 14C swears a bird has been sitting on his balcony rail since the spring. You tell him it's pigeons. He tells you pigeons don't stare. The night you finally go up with a torch, the rail is empty, but there's a scatter of pellets and one grey feather caught in the mesh.

The owl turns up in the stairwell after that, always on the landing window, its face pressed to the glass the way a child's would be, orange eyes catching the security light. The council wants the block cleared for repairs, and residents argue at the meeting in the community hall about damp and lifts and who pays. You sit at the back with a flask of tea. When the chair asks for objections, you say nothing, because you've started to think the owl is the only one who has been paying proper attention to the building all along.
On the last night before the scaffolding goes up, you climb to the roof. Wind pushes at the aerial cables. The owl is on the parapet, perfectly upright, turning its head to watch the lit windows one by one, the way a night caretaker counts keys. It lets you come within an arm's length. Then it opens its wings, drops past the edge into the dark, and rises over the car park with the sodium glow on its back.
Next morning the lift works. Someone has painted a small owl on the wall by the bins, eyes wide and yellow, and nobody will say who did it. You leave it alone.
