Wolf head tattoo on a finger
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small wolf head faces forward on the side of a middle finger, with its ears, snout and eyes picked out in fine detail. The tattoo is shaded in black and grey, with soft gradients across the fur and darker lines around the eyes and nose. The hand rests on a pale surface, and the blue nails with gold glitter tips contrast with the grey ink.

The wolf came down off Hollin Fell the week the snow shut the pass, and nobody in Garth Dale believed it until my father found its prints in the lambing shed. Each one was as broad as a saucer and set square before the next, as if the animal had been walking a rope.

He set out the old iron bowl with mutton fat in it and bolted the gate at dusk. By morning the fat was gone and the wolf was sitting on the far side of the wall, grey as the stones, watching our ewes with eyes so pale they looked lit from behind. It never snarled. It only turned its head when my mother called the dog in, as though it was listening for a name it knew.
On the ninth day Tom Hebden did not come off the tops with his flock. My father was too stiff to climb, so I took the lantern and went up alone, and the wolf went ahead of me, stopping every few yards to look back, the way a good dog does. It led me past the cairn to a hollow full of drifted white. Tom lay curled under his coat with his collie stiff beside him, and the wolf lay down against his back and pressed close until I could hear him breathing.
We carried Tom down on a hurdle between us, and the wolf walked behind us the whole way, though none of us asked it to. Tom never spoke of that night, and my father said we owed wolves nothing and would not be thanked for a debt we never meant to pay. Still, I fill the bowl every dusk. Some mornings the frost on the wall holds one neat print after another, square and deliberate, and I leave the gate unbolted.
