Owl tattoo on a middle finger
Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A small owl sits on the middle finger of a clenched fist, shown front on with its wings folded and its feathers detailed in fine black linework. The owl's eyes are filled with yellow-orange ink, while the body is shaded in black and grey. The close crop keeps the tattoo centred, with the fingers and a corner of a yellow top visible around it.

The owl had been on the middle finger of Mrs Abernethy's left hand for forty years, and everyone in the village of Tallow Brook agreed it was the only thing about her that had never once been rude. The owl watched the lamplighter, the vicar's donkey, and the long grey river that bent around the mill. When the mill wheel seized in the frost, the miller's boy came running up the lane with his cap in his fist, shouting that nobody could find the sluice key. Mrs Abernethy held up her hand, pressed the fist against her chest, and told him to ask the owl.

The boy looked at her as though she had gone soft in the head. She shrugged and told him the owl had seen the key go into the water the spring before, when old Tobias dropped it off the bridge and swore at the fish. The boy ran off to the bridge and came back an hour later, soaked to the elbows, holding the key above his head like a trophy.
That night the miller brought a jar of honey up to the cottage and found Mrs Abernethy sitting by the fire with her hand open on her knee, the owl's yellow eyes catching the light. He asked her how she had known. She only said that owls remember everything they have seen, and that people who lose things should look closer to home before they blame the river.
