Small owl tattoo on a finger

Hand · Mixed · Photo

A small owl sits on the middle finger of a clenched fist, with the head and wings drawn in grey shading and the body outlined in darker lines. The owl's eyes are filled in yellow-orange, which is the only colour in the design. The fist is shown from the front against a light surface, with the wearer's yellow top and blue nail polish visible at the edges of the frame.

Her brother Dai had gone down the number four drift at the end of his shift and not come up with the cage. The overman had sent word at ten past nine, flat-voiced, saying roof fall at the second junction and men digging. Nobody would tell her more than that. So she walked up the tip path with her mother's brass lamp, the one with the yellow glass, and sat on the old winding house step where the owls could see her.

It turned its head all the way round, then looked at her as if it had decided something. She stood up, though her legs were stiff, and followed it down the slope towards the pit gates, where a knot of lamps was already moving on the far side of the fence.

Dai was the third man out. He was black to the elbows and swearing at nobody, and he stopped dead when he saw her on the path. 'You daft article,' he said, and she laughed so hard she had to sit down on the cinders.
