Owl tattoo on an ankle

Dotwork · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small owl with large round eyes sits on a thin branch, drawn in black and grey with stippled shading across its body and wings. The tattoo sits on the lower leg just above the ankle, with a thin chain anklet and a white shoe visible below it. The plain dark background keeps the focus on the linework and shading.

You will laugh, but I have been losing my hours to a small owl. It came to the bare ash beside the scriptorium window the week after Michaelmas, a grey thing no bigger than my fist, and it has sat on the same thin branch every dusk since, looking in at us with those great round eyes as though it were the one copying the psalter. Brother Tobias says it is a witch's familiar. I say it is the only one of us who keeps proper hours.

I have tried to draw it. Abbot Edmund gave me a goose quill and a pot of iron gall, and I have spent three evenings making dots, because the feathers will not be drawn, only pricked in, one dot after another until the grey comes up like frost on a window. The brothers call it my penance. The owl does not care. When I hold the page up to the glass it blinks at my wretched attempts and turns its head as if to say the branch is holding up well enough.

Last night the bell for compline rang while my ink was still wet. I looked up and the branch was bare, though the owl had not flown. It had simply sunk into the dark of the ash so that only its eyes showed, two pale coins above the page. I finished the line by candle. Brother Tobias came to take my lamp and found me writing the same word over and over: watch. Forgive me, my friend. I have no better news than that.
