Marjorie Penhallow had been awake since half past two, and by four the bakery on Fenner Street smelled the way it always did, of scorched sugar and yeast that had been waiting all night. The ovens ticked as they heated. Her nephew Dev had not yet arrived to knead, so she worked alone, slashing the tops of the tin loaves with a razor blade.

Behind the flour bins, on a folded sack that had once held Hove wholemeal, lay Biscuit, the grey cat who had arrived in the November storm and refused to leave. He slept the way he did everything, tail wrapped twice around his haunches, chin tucked into the curve of his own body, one ear turned towards the oven as though listening for a dough that had not yet risen. Marjorie had tried to draw him once on the back of a delivery note and given up when the pen would not stop going round.

At five Dev came in shaking rain from his hood, and the two of them loaded the racks without speaking. Dev asked whether the cat would be fed before the shop opened. Marjorie said he had eaten at four, as he always did, and that he would wake only when the first customer rang the bell, because he disapproved of queues. Dev laughed, and Biscuit did not stir.

When the shutter went up at seven, the cat was still curled in the same unbroken shape, the way a line stays whole when the hand never lifts from the page. Marjorie set a tray of cooling loaves on the sill beside him and let him sleep on.
