Matching owl tattoos on inner wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two owl tattoos sit side by side on the inner wrists, arranged as a mirrored pair. Each owl has a rounded body, large round eyes and a small beak, with small flower motifs and stippled shading filling the body. The image is black and grey and framed closely on the wrists against a plain, softly lit background.

The fairground lights come on one bulb at a time along the Hollis Road field, and you are the one who has to count them, because your brother always forgets. Mr Pardoe's gallopers wheeze into their first tune while the generator coughs behind the caravans. You carry the cash tin under your arm like a loaf of bread and tell yourself it is not heavier than last year.

The ring toss stall is yours on Thursdays. Among the prizes hangs a row of stuffed owls with button eyes, and one of them has a patch of tiny stitched flowers across its belly that you swapped your good penknife for in March. Nobody else on the field would have traded for it. Mrs Okonedo at the candyfloss van says you are soft. You say the owl was looking at you, and she laughs until she has to sit down on the step.
Late, when the rides shut down and the last generator sighs, you go round the back of the dodgems with a torch in your teeth and open the tin. There is less in it than you hoped. Still, the owl on the top shelf turns its head a fraction when your beam crosses it, one eye open and one eye shut, as if it has been keeping watch on you all along and has decided, for tonight, to let you off.
